I think I’ve always had a pen in my hand or a keyboard under my fingertips. I’ve made a living with the written word since 1985, and I can’t imagine doing anything else for long. My writing creds to date include:
- 13 years as a reporter and section editor for daily and weekly newspapers (general assignments, 3-county beat, features, education)
- 2 years as a trade magazine editor and several years as a freelance writer
- 2 years working for a university public relations office, primarily as a science editor
- 2 years as a university’s assistant director of publications
- 5 years as a technical writer/editor/project manager for a transportation company
- 1 year as a technical writer/editor for a transportation company’s sales database
- Compiled information for/edited 3 nonfiction trade paperback books for a small publishing company; I believe all are out of print now, but you can still see the cover and brief description of one at Amazon.com
- Bachelor of Arts in Journalism
- 4 years writing for a university newspaper
Also, I volunteered as a print journalism expert (newspapers and magazines) at AllExperts.com from around 2002 to 2008 but recently resigned. It was fun while it lasted, but journalism is undergoing an upheaval right now as it adjusts to Internet pressures and a shrinking workforce. Although I’m still confident in my journalistic writing skills, I’m no longer comfortable in representing the field as I don’t know firsthand what the pressures and priorities are in everyday journalism today. It was fun advising new and aspiring journalists on basic journalism skills, though!
My writer’s profile page at Writers.net is here, although it hasn’t been updated in a while.
